In the Fall 2023 semester UNMAM officially re-launched our Student Advisory Council (formerly known as the Student Advisory Board) after a hiatus of the group due to the COVID-19 pandemic. While SAC retains portions of its former mission, the group’s focus was re-envisioned to provide UNM students with access to the UNMAM collection, opportunities for professional development, and to involve SAC as a consultative and collaborative body in UNMAM functions.
Throughout the Fall 2023 semester SAC met a total of four times and collaborated on two projects together. The first project was the organization of the annual “UNMAM Birthday Bash” an event created to celebrate the museum’s history and collection, and to open our space to students who may not be familiar with UNMAM.
Students in SAC were invited to create a small exhibition of works on paper from our collection to be displayed in the Beaumont Newhall Study Room throughout our birthday celebration. Students were given an abbreviated list of 20th Century Prints and Photographs that were available to pull from our collection. After conducting individual research on artists and/or mediums they were interested in, UNMAM Curator of Collections and Study Room Initiatives, Angel Jiang, worked with students on pairing down their selections into a cohesive display that explored our varied collection. For their second project SAC created a digital reading list that paired thematically with the exhibition, Hindsight Insight 3.0 (read about the exhibition here.) Students in SAC were encouraged to explore and visit Hindsight Insight 3.0 throughout the semester. By late October, SAC met with UNMAM Curator of Prints & Photographs, Mary Statzer, to discuss and finalize their digital reading list selections, which ranged from documentary videos, books on color theory, to museum theory and social justice awareness.
