BioSymposium: Open Call for SUBMISSIONS

The University of New Mexico Art Museum is excited to announce an open call for submissions to BioSymposium — a research showcase that will be hosted on November 15th in connection to The University of New Mexico Research & Discovery Week 2024. 

Exploring themes and concepts from UNMAM’s current exhibition, Hindsight Insight 5.0BioSymposium will bring together artists, researchers, and those on the forefront of creative exploration at the University of New Mexico.  This symposium aims to create space for UNM alumni and current UNM students, faculty, and staff to present their research and to discover the vast worlds of biology, art, science, technology, and their respective intersections. 

UNMAM is seeking submissions for interdisciplinary presentations and panels about works and/or research that span across both scientific and artistic pursuits. This includes: 

  • Lecture presentations of artworks or artistic processes. (2D works on paper, 3D works, video, new media, installation artworks, digital art, internet art, interactive medias etc.) 
  • Past or ongoing research at the intersections of art, design, visualization, science, biology, and technology. 
  • Scientific findings at the intersections of art, design, visualization, science, biology, and technology. 
  • Other topics/projects as presenters see fit, corresponding to the themes of BioSymposium.

Submissions for BioSymposium can be inspired by, or connected to, UNMAM’s current exhibition, Hindsight Insight 5.0. Broader topics and themes can also include:

  • Biology 
  • Computer Science

Individual Presentations

Individual presenters are invited to prepare a 15-minute presentation with an additional 5 minutes for audience questions.  

Please submit an application through our submission form at the bottom of this page. All applicants are asked to submit applications using our submission template available for download below.

Note: Please upload your completed submission template as either a .DOCX or .PDF file type, no larger than 10MB. Applications submitted without using the template will be rejected.

In your submission, please include your name, the title of your presentation, a 250-word abstract, along with a one-page description, or excerpt, of your presentation.  

For individuals speaking about ongoing projects, please prepare to deliver a polished and comprehensive presentation about the current state of your work, with an explanation of the future of the project. 

At the end of the application there will be additional space to include supplemental materials such as: slides, images, videos, and links to further help us understand the direction of the presentation.  

Panel Presentations

Individuals are invited to submit panel presentations – with a maximum of 4 speakers. Panels will be limited to 20 minutes with an additional 5 minutes for audience questions.

Note: Please upload your completed submission template as either a .DOCX or .PDF file type, no larger than 10MB. Applications submitted without using the template will be rejected.

In your panel submission, please include all the names and titles/ UNM affiliation of each speaker, a 500-word abstract on the topic of the panel, and a one-page description and/or excerpt of the topic to be presented during the panel. (One panelist MUST be listed as the primary point of contact.) 

For presenters speaking about ongoing projects, please prepare to deliver a polished and comprehensive presentation about the current state of your work, with an explanation of the future of the project.

Important Dates

September 13 – Submission form opens.

October 16 – Submission form closes at 11:59 PM (MST).

October 23 – Notification of accepted presentations and panels will be sent to participants.

November 15 – BioSymposium. (Details on the location for BioSymposium are forthcoming.)

Additional Information

Accommodations can be made for the presentation of other materials. Please provide a description of the accommodations within your submission. Please note that physical items containing airborne contaminants (mold, fungus, etc) will need to be considered on a case-by-case basis and may not be able to be physically brought into BioSymposium

Submissions will be reviewed by UNMAM staff and additional affiliates. Submissions will be evaluated on their relevance to the topic of BioArt, Hindsight Insight 5.0., along with artistic merit, originality, organization, and the advancement of the presenter’s respective field.
