2023 Study Room Wrap-Up

The Fall 2023 semester was busy at UNMAM, not only did we reach a total of 10,074 visitors to the museum, but we also had a record number of visits and visitors to the Beaumont Newhall Study Room since our reopening in 2021 after the COVID-19 pandemic.  

Curator of Collections & Study Room Initiatives, Angel Jiang, welcomed 61 visits to the Study Room this Fall, for a total of 671 visitors, which includes UNM students, faculty, staff, and the general public. From August to December, Jiang pulled 624 works from our collection, the top three most requested artworks this semester were:

1. Carrie Mae Weems, Untitled (Mother and Daughter with Make Up) from the Kitchen Table Series, 1990, gelatin silver print, Artist’s Proof (98.16).

2. Delilah Montoya, Sagrado Corazón: Loca y Sweetie, 1993, collotype, edition 1/1 (2023.3.1). 

3. Jess Dugan, Taan, 2012, printed 2019, archival pigment print, edition 1/10 (2020.1.4).

The Study Room hosted class visits from UNM’s Art, Theater, Communication & Journalism, English, and Spanish & Portuguese departments, Tamarind Institute, the Latin American and Iberian Institute, and the Museum Studies program; the CNM Art Department, Santa Fe Community College, local high schools, New Mexico Art League, the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum; local and visiting artists; and researchers working on exhibitions, book and dissertation projects, theses, and conference presentations. 

2023 was a successful year for the Beaumont Newhall Study Room in our engagement with UNM classes and groups, and larger Albuquerque communities. In the Study Room, we had a grand total of 133 visits, with 1,385 visitors ranging across the Spring, Summer, and Fall semesters. In total over 1,700 artworks were pulled from our collection and displayed to our guests.
