DESCRIPTION:The University of New Mexico Art Museum is proud to host BioSymposium — a research showcase to be held on November 15th in collaboration with The University of New Mexico Research & Discovery Week 2024.   \nExploring themes and concepts from UNMAM’s current exhibition\, Hindsight Insight 5.0\, BioSymposium will bring together artists\, researchers\, and those on the forefront of creative exploration at the University of New Mexico.  This symposium aims to create a space for current UNM students\, faculty\, and staff to present their research and to discover the vast worlds of biology\, art\, science\, technology\, and their respective intersections.  UNMAM believes in strengthening networks of collaboration and knowledge creation across disciplines and across campus. \nUNMAM is excited to announce Basia Irland as the keynote speaker of the symposium\, with presentations by Chanee Choi\, Blair Mirka\, and Dustin Roberto. During the reception\, from 5:30 – 6:30 PM\, we invite you to attend presentations by Madeline Griffin\, M.A. Candidate in Latin American Studies\, University of New Mexico; and Brandon Morgan\, PhD\, Associate Dean\, School of Liberal Arts at Central New Mexico Community College. \n  \nAbout the Exhibition:\nGraphic Art and Revolution brings together Latin American political posters from two major repositories at the university: the University of New Mexico Art Museum and the Sam L. Slick Collection of Latin American and Iberian Posters at the Center for Southwest Research. This exhibition features materials produced in response to populist\, anti-imperialist\, and anti-dictatorial revolutionary and resistance movements from 1968 to 2000. Representing a range of nations and organizations\, it includes prints created in Mexico\, Nicaragua\, El Salvador\, Panama\, Peru\, Chile\, Argentina\, and Cuba. It is organized into three sections that each focus on how graphic art has been employed as an agent and artifact of revolution: Inventing Revolutionary Icons\, The Institutionalization of Revolution\, and Global Solidarities. \n  \nAbout the Speakers:\nMadeline Griffin\, M.A. Candidate in Latin American Studies\, UNM\nOriginally from East Tennessee\, Madeline Griffin is an M.A. student in Latin American Studies pursuing a concentration in conflict\, peace\, and rights.  She is also a K-12 Cultural Education & Outreach Graduate Assistant at the Latin American & Iberian Institute. She has had the opportunity to tutor English\, work in archives\, international affairs\, and various cultural institutions to complement her studies while at UNM. She holds an NCHC honors degree and B.A. from Emory & Henry College\, where she majored in International Studies\, History\, and Hispanic Studies and worked as an International Education advisor. She loves the arts\, reading\, spending time outdoors\, and working with English-language learners. Madeline hopes to use what she’s learned at UNM to continue developing resources and projects that extend inclusive\, interdisciplinary thought\, programming\, and resources to the greater public. \n  \n  \nBrandon Morgan\, PhD\nLandscapes of Revolution in Columbus\, New Mexico\, and Palomas\, Chihuahua: 1893\, 1908\, 1916\, and 1961 \nScholars have long debated the end date of the Mexican Revolution\, some placing it in 1920\, others in 1940\, and still others as an open-ended movement that has been in continuing evolution since the violence began in November of 1910. The revolution’s start date is rarely questioned. My research on the New Mexico-Chihuahua borderlands\, detailed in Raid and Revolution (University of Nebraska Press\, 2024)\, examines movements to resist the violence of the Porfiriato dating back to 1892. Although uprisings that targeted the Palomas customs house along the rural border failed to unseat Porfirio Díaz\, they laid the groundwork for later revolutionary movements. \nIn this presentation\, I outline attacks on the Palomas customs house in 1893 and 1908 that revealed the weaknesses of the pax porfiriana\, as well as the connections between Pancho Villa and the twin communities of Palomas and Columbus that provide important context on his raid on the New Mexico border town in 1916. By the early 1960s\, the landscapes of Columbus had fully been subsumed by Villa’s actions when dignitaries from both nations dedicated Pancho Villa State Park as a site geared to remake the memory of the violence of the Mexican Revolution. \nDr. Brandon Morgan is Associate Dean for History\, Latin American Studies\, American Studies\, Native American Studies\, and Communication at Central New Mexico Community College (CNM)\, where he has taught since the fall of 2009. Between 2016 and the present\, he worked on building CNM’s Latin American Studies associate’s degree program through a partnership with UNM’s Latin American and Iberian Institute. That partnership included CNM’s first ever Study Abroad program to Antigua\, Guatemala in 2018\, with a second program to Antigua in 2023 and another in Mexico City in 2024. His book\, Raid and Reconciliation: Pancho Villa\, Modernization\, and Violence in the U.S.-Mexico Borderlands\, was published with the University of Nebraska Press in August 2024. \n  \n  \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:ABOVE: Museum guest explores “Hindsight Insight 5.0.” Photograph by Stefan Jennings Batista. \nJoin us at The University of New Mexico Art Museum on November 8th from 2:00 – 3:00 PM for a free public tour of Hindsight Insight 5.0 with UNMAM staff and exhibition collaborators.  \nHindsight Insight 5.0 is the final installment of the UNM Art Museum’s hybrid project and exhibition space devoted to complicating existing narratives about racism\, colonialism\, and gender stereotypes while de-centering curatorial authority and institutional voice. \nHindsight Insight 5.0 concludes the exhibition series by imagining the galleries as a laboratory\, demonstrating how research and experimentation are put into action through projects at the intersection of art and science. \nCreated and curated by museum staff and collaborators\, the exhibition features new artwork by five contemporary artists affiliated with the University of New Mexico and one object from the museum’s permanent collection: a nineteenth century album of microscopic photographs of the natural world.

Loan from the artist.\nJoin us on Thursday\, October 24th\, from 5 – 6 PM for an artist talk with Rachel Cox. \nThis artist talk will be held in PAIS Room 1100. PAIS is the Physics & Astronomy and Interdisciplinary Science building on UNM Main Campus\, located on the northeast corner of Yale Blvd. and Redondo Dr. at 210 Yale Blvd NE\, Albuquerque\, NM 87106. \n  \nFROM THE ARTIST:\nIn 2021 I had my first miscarriage. Over the course of the next three years\, I underwent surgical procedures to increase my chances of conception\, began in vitro fertilization (IVF)\, accessed emergency abortion care\, and\, with my partner Matt\, adopted a donor egg which led to the birth of our daughter. \nWe are at a critical moment in history where birthing people have lost federal protections for the right to decide how and when they will build their families. The lack of fact-based information around reproductive health is widespread and contributes to mass misinformation which infects the social\, cultural\, and political landscape of this country. \nThe photographs I make examine personal and cultural stigmas associated with female infertility while also raising awareness for the millions of people who seek to build their families though assisted reproductive technologies (ART). \nNotes on Care is a selection of pieces which reflect on the action of care; the various moments that require care\, starting with the self\, and traveling as far as the care taken to honor an embryo meant for implantation. I look forward to discussing these ideas alongside broader research centered on the history of female bodies in works of art\, the complexities of self-portraiture\, and current statistical information on assisted reproductive technologies. \n  \nRACHEL COX: \nRachel Cox is an artist\, educator\, and feminist with a deep commitment to crafting image-based works of art which challenge cultural and social conventions pertaining to reproduction and care. Cox holds an MFA in Photography from the University of New Mexico and a BFA in Photography from the University of North Texas. Her work has been featured widely in the U.S. and abroad including the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art\, Cincinnati Contemporary Arts Center\, the Des Moines Art Center; Southeast Museum of Photography; The Atlanta Contemporary Art Center; The Houston Center for Photography; The Belfast International Photography Festival\, The Musee de l’Elysee\, Lausanne\, Switzerland; Baijia Art Museum in Nanjing\, China; Museo Amparo\, Pueblo\, Mexico\, and Photo London. Cox’s projects have been recognized with numerous awards including an Iowa Arts Project Grant\, the 2024 Visionary Project Award through Film Photo & Kodak\, and is a finalist for the 2025 Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition\, hosted and exhibited at the National Portrait Gallery in Washington DC \nCox’s prints are included in the collections of The Museum of Fine Arts Houston\, The Des Moines Arts Center\, The Southeast Museum of Photography\, The Museum of Contemporary Photography\, The Musee de l’Elysee\, and The University of North Texas Special Collections. Rachel Cox currently lives in Iowa City\, IA where she is an Associate Professor of Photography at The University of Iowa.

DESCRIPTION:Elderflora will be performed at ARTSLab on Friday\, October 18th\, from 5:30 – 6:30 PM. Tickets are free and required for entry\, please register below. ARTSLab is located on the northwest corner of Central Ave. and University Blvd.\, at 131 Pine Street NE\, Albuquerque\, NM 87106. \nImage by Noah Kalina.\nElderflora is the story of the life of a tree. \nFrom birth by fire to death by lightning\, we follow this ancient being’s inner thoughts and feelings in hyperreal detail. Told from the perspective of the tree itself\, Elderflora (“old trees”) conjures a world where trees can talk to us.  \nWritten by vocalist and composer Majel Connery\, the music of Elderflora combines the earthy tones of cello (played by Felix Fan) with Connery’s lush electronic vocal manipulations. Her work mixes the beauty of a distant Classical past with the power of modern technology in a soundscape both natural and supernatural. \n“Trees are a lot like people\, and this is their superpower.” says Connery. “They have skin. They can bruise\, and bleed. They’re also giants among us doing supernatural stuff. I want us to see trees for what they are — familiar\, and utterly out of this world.” \nElderflora is dedicated to the message of Chief Oren Lyons of Onondaga Nation\, Member Chief of the Onondaga Council of Chiefs and the Grand Council of the Iroquois Confederacy. It tours fall 2024 with video and images by American photographer Noah Kalina. \n \n  \nMajel Connery\nMajel Connery is a composer\, performer\, podcaster and musicologist. Her music has been called “superb” by the New York Times and “thoroughly Schubertian” by the Wall Street Journal\, and has appeared on Radiolab\, Kennedy Center Live\, and New Sounds radio. \nThe Rivers are our Brothers\, Connery’s song cycle on ecological responsibility\, was commissioned by Musica Sierra and is being toured by Grammy-winning choir Chanticleer. This fall\, Connery toured Rivers as a duo with electric cellist Felix Fan in the Southwest\, in Italy\, and returns in the spring to Ohio and California with Australian duo Bowerbird. \nConnery is the host and producer of A Music of Their Own\, an interview podcast on NPR about women in the music industry. She appears frequently as a solo artist\, and with NYC-based art-rock band\, Sky Creature. \n

SUMMARY:Music and the Art of Activism: Artist talk with Majel Connery
DESCRIPTION:Image by Noah Kalina. \nJoin us on Wednesday\, October 16th from 5:00 – 6:00 PM inside Hindsight Insight 5.0 at the UNM Art Museum for an artist talk and live musical demonstration with artist/composer Majel Connery. \nMajel Connery is an environmental composer who uses music to illuminate the inner life of nature. Her compositional approach involves personifying the natural world\, giving voice to things like rocks\, rivers and trees. In this one-hour talk/demonstration\, Connery uses a variety of electronic tools\, and selections from her work Elderflora\, to demonstrate her craft of art and activism. “Trees are so humanlike already. They’re the perfect subject to test this approach. I want us to believe the trees are talking to us\,” says Connery.  \nMusic and the Art of Activism is a prorgam that will precede Connery’s performance of Elderflora at UNM ARTSLab on Friday\, October 18th from 5:30 – 6:30 PM. DESCRIPTION:Image of the 1970 exhibition Constructivist Tendencies at the UNM Art Museum.  From the UNMAM Archives.  \nYou’re invited to join The University of New Mexico Art Museum in celebration of over sixty years of exhibits\, events\, and dedication to UNM’s student community.  \nOn Saturday\, October 5\, we will be celebrating all day with free art activities centered around our current exhibits and will offer a guided tour of Hindsight Insight 5.0 with UNMAM staff and artists featured in the exhibition! Read below about the programs we are offering during our birthday celebration. (Please note that tickets to the public tour of Hindsight Insight 5.0 are required\, but free. You can reserve tickets at the bottom of this page.) \n  \nResponse\, Art Activity (10:00 – 12:00 PM) \n\nResponse is a timeless tool used by artists to learn new skills\, understand other artists’ work\, and develop their own practices. UNMAM has various examples of this process currently on display — Hindsight/Insight 5.0 features artist responses to a piece from our collection\, a nineteenth century album of microscopic photographs. These artistic responses take the forms of sculpture\, biomaterials\, installation\, digital rendering\, and more.   \nJoin us inside Hindsight/Insight 5.0 for a brief talk about response\, its history\, and its potential. Afterward\, guests will be free to take a closer look at all our exhibits\, then form their own artistic response to the work we currently have on display through the forms of writing\, drawing\, and sketching.   \nAll skill levels are welcome\, whether you create a sketch\, pitch\, or something else entirely during this activity. Guests will reconvene at the end of the program for a casual discussion of ideas and what was noticed or learned throughout this activity.  \n  \nCraft a Microscopic Image\, Art Activity (12:00 – 2:00 PM) \nImage of an artwork created during the “Craft a Microscopic Image” art making program on September 14\, 2024\, at the UNM Art Museum.\nInspired by Hindsight Insight 5.0\, this hands-on workshop invites guests to view microscopic specimens with our in-gallery microscope and explore images inside Microphotographs Presented to the Royal Institute of Chemistry by Henry Droop Richmond — a bound volume of microphotographs created between 1877-1883.    \nIn the CFA Lobby\, guests are invited to create their own version of a microscopic image with a variety of arts and craft supplies ranging from hot glue and glitter to feathers\, paints\, construction paper\, and more! Recreate the microscopic images you’ve seen in Hindsight Insight 5.0\, draw inspiration from them\, or let your imagination run wild to create something new.   \nWhether you’re inspired by the microscopic world or wish to create a fictional masterpiece\, this session will encourage you to think and design creatively in a fun\, hands-on environment.  \n  \nTour of Hindsight Insight 5.0 (3:00 – 4:00 PM) \nMuseum guest explores “Hindsight Insight 5.0.” Photograph by Stefan Jennings Batista.\nThe celebration of our Birthday Bash ends with a free public tour of Hindsight Insight 5.0 led by UNMAM staff and exhibition artists: Fiona Bell\, Kaitlin Bryson\, Amy Pilling\, and Andrea Polli.  Guests will hear the artists speak on their artistic practice and the creation of the artworks inside Hindsight Insight 5.0\, and learn about the vast field of BioArt.  \nHindsight Insight 5.0 is the final installment of the UNM Art Museum’s hybrid project and exhibition space devoted to complicating existing narratives about racism\, colonialism\, and gender stereotypes while de-centering curatorial authority and institutional voice.  \nCreated and curated by museum staff and collaborators\, the exhibition features new artwork by five contemporary artists affiliated with the University of New Mexico and one object from the museum’s permanent collection: a nineteenth century album of microscopic photographs of the natural world.  \nTickets are required for the public tour of Hindsight Insight 5.0 – but are free. Everyone is welcome\, but (free) registration is required.   \nThe symposium begins with opening remarks from UNMAM Associate Director Devin E. Geraci at 11:00 AM. Concurrent sessions will occur throughout the day\, inviting you to discover various positions within museums\, ranging traditional roles such as curators\, directors\, and educators\, alongside specialized areas like exhibition design\, grant writing\, marketing\, and technology. Speakers will share their stories\, expertise\, and passion for museum work.    \nFollowing the schedule of presentations\, join us in the Center for the Arts Lobby for a networking mixer\, giving attendees the opportunity to connect with professionals\, peers\, and potential mentors.    \nThis event is presented in collaboration with the UNMAM Museum Assistant Program and made possible by a generous grant from the New Mexico Creative Industries Division.   \nParking Notice: Due to several major events happening on campus\, please expect HIGH TRAFFIC and ROAD CLOSURES around campus. SUMMARY:Andy Warhol Art Day
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an art day celebrating the work of Andy Warhol\, on Saturday 4/6 from 10 AM – 12 PM. \nIn the Center for the Arts lobby\, museum staff will lead a gelli plate printmaking workshop open to all ages. In this workshop guests will create monoprints inspired by the work of Andy Warhol. During the workshop guests will be invited to take a portrait inside the Hindsight Insight 4.0 portrait studio\, and then will create a monoprint using their portrait. Throughout the workshop visitors will be introduced to gelli plate printmaking and will gain familiarity with Warhol’s styles of portraiture.  \nSupplies and materials will be provided by UNMAM\, all minors MUST be accompanied by an adult. Guests are required to register for the workshop below\, the sign-up form will open on 4/1 and close on 4/5. \n

DESCRIPTION:The UNM Art Museum presents The University of New Mexico Department of Art’s 31st Annual Juried Graduate Exhibition. The exhibition\, titled Swimming In It\, features the work of fifteen artists currently enrolled in the MFA Program and working in all mediums – painting\, sculpture\, printmaking\, photography\, sound and video installation. \nArtworks were selected by jurors Joshua Hagler and Maja Ruznic. \n Join us from 5 – 7 PM on Friday\, March 29\, to celebrate the work of these UNM artists!

SUMMARY:Student Gallery Talk
DESCRIPTION:In collaboration with Hindsight Insight 4.0 the museum will install self-portraits taken by undergraduate students from Art Practices II classes\, with professors jessamyn lovell and Ellen Babcock. The photographs are displayed in the Van Deren Coke Gallery as part of one section of Hindsight Insight 4.0\, titled A Sense of Self: Performing Identity for the Camera.  \nJoin us for an informal reception in the Coke Gallery where students will be giving talks about the images they produced through the museum’s in-gallery portrait studio.
